What are mechanical musical instruments
It is all about antique machines that play music auomatically, without any intervention by a musician:
- Mechanical musical instruments: for example music boxes. The instrument plays a preselected piece of music by mechanical means;
- Pneumatic musical instruments: for example pipe organs or orchestrions. A pneumatic musical instrument allows the player to build up the volume and timbre by adding stops of proportionately higher or lower pitch to the basic tone.
Music played automatically
The machine plays automatically by means of a pinned cylinder, a punched disc, a cardboard book or a perforated paper roll. The driving power source can be spring loaded, weight driven or motorised (as from 1910). The sound that is produced can be designed by using steel combs, piano strings, reeds or organ pipes.
