Daniel de Bie from Balen restaures your antique mechanical musical instrument

Collecting and restauring antique mechanical musical instruments in Balen started as a youngsters hobby some 40 years ago. It became a life time passion and experience. Being specialised in upright music boxes, German orchestrions and Belgian dance organs, Daniël De Bie from Balen restaures your musical instrument and helps you find an instrument or even specific parts of it. He is always in search of instruments and (spare) parts that are hard to find. In addition, he buys and sells mechanical and pneumatic musical instruments and makes sure every instrument gets the second life it deserves.

Sorts of music instruments

What are mechanical musical instruments? It is all about antique machines that play music auomatically, without any intervention by a musician:

Mechanical: for example music boxes;
Pneumatic: for example pipe organs or orchestrions.

The machine plays automatically by means of a pinned cylinder, a punched disc, a cardboard book or a perforated paper roll. The driving power source can be spring loaded, weight driven or motorised (as from 1910). The sound that is produced can be designed by using steel combs, piano strings, reeds or organ pipes.
